VISX Star S4 Laser
Dr. Carlson uses the VISX S4 laser platform to perform laser eye procedures. More laser vision surgeries are performed with the VISX laser than any other laser brands combined.
The VISX STAR S4 is a product of the company that pioneered the development of excimer laser systems. This laser requires a shorter procedure time and contains sophisticated eye tracking capabilities. The ActiveTrak™ 3-D Active Eye Tracking can capture all three dimensions of intra-operative eye movements without dilation of the pupils. One benefit of the VISX laser is that it produces the smoothest surface on the cornea after the procedure, which promotes faster healing, resulting in better vision. The Star S4 laser is FDA approved to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Our VISX Star S4 excimer laser has state of the art technology in optics, precision eye tracking, and sophisticated variable beam delivery combining to provide the most predictable precise laser vision correction possible. The S4 laser includes the latest updates in hardware and software, making sure every available improvement is implemented to expand the laser’s capabilities and accuracy.
The VISX Star S4 currently offers the widest range of correction available today for the treatment of these conditions. Current treatment options range from -0.75 diopters to -13.00 diopters of nearsightedness, +1.00 diopters to +4.50 diopters of farsightedness, and up to 6.00 diopters of astigmatism. Treatments are based on your age and the thickness of your cornea.

At the heart of the CustomVue™ procedure is the VISX WaveScan® system. The WaveScan® is 25 times more precise measuring visual imperfections than the technology commonly used to prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Using WaveScan® technology, a unique map of your eye is created. The resulting WavePrint®map produces a “fingerprint of your vision,” providing the Minnesota Eye Institute with a precise and detailed guide for how to best improve your vision.

The most advanced technique uses an FDA-approved, computer-controlled laser designed specifically for the creation of the cornea flap. This technique, called IntraLASIK, provides an entirely new level of precision in vision correction. Instead of using a microkeratome, a motorized device with a sharp blade, to make the corneal flap, it is created with the IntraLase FS – a special rapid pulse laser called a femtosecond laser. The corneal flap is then lifted and the Visx STAR S4 FDA-approved excimer laser is used to perform the actual vision correction.
The IntraLase™ FS
Minnesota Eye Institute uses state of the art laser technology. The Intralase™ FS Laser provides an all-laser approach to lasik surgery. It uses a silent, tiny beam of laser light that is focused into a small spot of energy. This energy passes harmlessly through the outermost layers of the cornea until it reaches the exact measurement within the corneal layer needed to make the flap. Not only does it have a new level of safety assurance, but the computer-controlled laser provides unprecedented control and enables the surgeon to customize the flap according to the individual’s vision disorder and corneal anatomy. More patients may now be candidates for laser vision correction due to this unique level of precision that was previously unavailable.
